Chargers take two from Guthrie soccer

March 31, 2010 Leave a comment

Both the Guthrie girls and boys soccer teams will finally be back on their home turf starting next week after a three game road stand.

The third road game was not what the Jays and Lady Jays wanted as the Chargers swept the double-header with the Lady Jays falling 7-0 and the Jays dropping an overtime setback 3-2.

The Lady Jays have dropped their last five games and have been shut out in their last three. The games do not get easier with Class 5A’s fourth ranked team coming to town next Tuesday.

In the boys game, Memorial scored the first and second goals to jump out to a quick 2-0 lead. Both goals came in the first 10 minutes of the game.

Guthrie, who had the wind in the first half, got goals from Zac Olson and Esau Paez to tie the game at two. Derek Kelley and Correy Whoolery assisted the goals.

However, Tulsa Memorial got the overtime goal to win 3-2.

Much like the Lady Hornets, the Tulsa Washington boys team is ranked fourth in 5A this week. The Hornets visit Guthrie Tuesday with the girl’s game starting at 5:30 and the boys to follow at 7:00.

Jays rally from big deficit to run rule Indians

March 30, 2010 Leave a comment

Baseball is a funny sport at times and El Reno was laughing early, but the BlueJays had the last laugh with an 18-10 five inning run rule win Monday afternoon.

El Reno, who trailed 2-0 after the first inning, faced three different BlueJay pitchers (Aaron Womack, Dustin Bowman, and Hayden Seifert), who allowed five hits, seven walks, and ten runs, in the second inning alone. The first four Indians drew walks to start the inning and was followed by two base hits as the first seven batters reached base before registering an out as they sent 15 men to the plate.

And that was not the biggest half inning of the day. That belong to the Jays in the home half of the third inning.

With the Jays trailing 10-4 in the third, Guthrie responded by sending 16 men to the plate and collecting 9 hits, in which, five of those were doubles. They also took advantage of two walks and two Indian errors.

Seifert, who finished the day 3-for-3, collected two hits alone in the inning as well as scoring twice. Landry Chappell and Bowman joined Seifert with two runs scored in the third alone.

Corbin Crockett, Luke Davis, and John Cotton collected back-to-back hits at the top of the line up to give the Jays the lead for good. Crockett and Cotton each had two RBIs with doubles. At one time, Guthrie sent 9 Jays to the plate before giving up an out.

In total, eight Jays had collected at least one hit and six have at least one RBI. Leading the way was Crockett. The senior infielder ended the day by going 4-for-5 with five RBIs. Davis was 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and Bowman was a perfect 3-for-3 with a RBI.

El Reno finished with 9 hits and Guthrie collected 18 hits. Following the 10 run eruption in the second, El Reno managed only four hits in 12 at bats.

Guthrie scratched two runs in the first, second, and the decisive fifth inning to give Seifert his second win to improve to 2-0 on the mound. Overall, the Jays improve to 11-3 and remain perfect in conference play at 6-0.

Both squads meet up again, in El Reno, Tuesday afternoon with a 4:30 first pitch. The Jays will begin the Choctaw Tournament on Wednesday as they play six games in six days this week. For the tournament schedule visit the home page of Guthrie Sports Page.

Galbreath wins 100 meter dash; twice

March 29, 2010 Leave a comment

The Guthrie track program stayed close to home with a trip to the Edmond Memorial Invitational Track Meet after spending the first few events in the Tulsa area.

Senior Rachel Roberts and the Lady Jays will compete at Douglass this Friday. The senior will run next season at Harding University.

Galbreath, a freshmen, and the rest of the 100 meter competitors were forced to race twice because times were not able to be retrieved. Galbreath won the first race as well.

Senior Rachel Roberts ran a 12:39.09 in the 3200 meter race and was good enough for sixth overall. Roberts time was 18 seconds off the winning time in the strong 6A field.

Fellow senior Alexis Daniels finished in a tie for third in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet and 10 inches. Erin Perring and CC Bates competed in the discus and finished seventh and eighth respectively. Perring had a toss of 101-01 and Bates with a 95-02.

Robinson collected a time of 10.81 and was just .02 faster than Southmoore’s Julian Wilson. Wilson is a University of Oklahoma football signee. Robinson has won the 100 meter race in each competition he has competed in this season.

Robinson’s 100 meter win collected 10 points for the Jays, and as a team finished fourth overall in the heavy 6A field. In fact, the junior was responsible for 26 of the Jays 48 total points.

The host team, Memorial, took top honors with a score of 155, Santa Fe second (147), Southmoore (62), and Guthrie (48). The Jays were without a few distance runners as they competed for the soccer team in Coweta.

Robinson, who won the 5A 110 meter hurdles at state last season as a sophomore, collected a second place finish and eight points with a time of 14.39. Edmond Santa Fe’s Gunnar Nixon, who many say is the best in the state, was .08 quicker for the top spot. This was the first event of the season for Robinson not to claim the top spot in the 110 meter hurdles.

Robinson collected eight more points by finishing second in the 200 meter dash in a time of 22.37. He was .10 slower than Southmoore’s D’Vante Henry. Dustin Bohanan’s, Guthrie’s all state football selection, earned two points with a fifth place finish.

In other individual races, Jonathan Ogan was seventh in the 1600 meter, Walker Cross finished eighth in the 3200 meter, and Zac Brown shot a 43-06 in the shot put to finish eighth.

In relay races, the 4 x 100 team of Robinson, Bohanan, Chaunsey Dumas, and Corbin Crockett finished second (42.50) behind Southmoore (42.25). The 4 x 800 Guthrie relay team finished fifth overall with a time of 8.50.09.

The unranked Guthrie boys soccer team made the trip up to T-Town and collected a 3-0 win over 11th ranked Coweta. The Lady Jays dropped their game with the Lady Tigers 1-0 in overtime.

The Jays, who are 5-2 overall and 1-0 in district play, have now won three games in a row as they played their second road game of a three game road trip. Next up is 6th ranked Tulsa Memorial tomorrow (Tuesday) and finally return for a four game home stand.

Guthrie got goals from Zach Olson, Omari Ajanaku, and Jason Ogan.

For the Lady Jays, who stand at 2-5 on the year and 0-1 in district 5A-3, they have now dropped their last four games after starting the season 2-1 in the Noble Rose Rock Tournament. The 11th ranked Guthrie girls will look to get back in the win column against Tulsa Memorial.

Jays split home double header

March 28, 2010 Leave a comment

The Guthrie baseball team was trying to do something that only Deer Creek has been able to do this year. Be an Oklahoma team to defeat Class 3A’s top ranked Chandler Lions.

Corbin Crockett takes some practice throws in between innings. Guthrie is now 10-3 on the season.

The Jays were not able to match what the Antlers did with a (5-4) win and dropped their contest 12-10 on a cool, Saturday afternoon game at Squires Field.

All was not lost as the Jays picked up an 8-3 win over seventh ranked Kingfisher, another 3A team. Chandler, in game two of the 3-game series, held off the Jackets in their final at bat to get the 3-2 win.

Chandler is now 14-3 on the season and has two of three losses coming from Texas schools. The Jays and Jackets had their chances late in the game to get by the Lions, but both left the bases loaded.

In game one, Guthrie jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning over the Lions. Jaden Chappell, a Cowley County signee, started the inning with a walk and cousin Landry Chappell drove him with a blast over the wall to give the Jays a 2-0 lead. The shot was Chappell’s second of the season.

Aaron Womack followed the blast with a double and later scored on a base hit from senior Dustin Bowman. However, Chandler got back two of the runs in their next at bat to pull within one of the Jays 3-2.

Guthrie matched the two runs in their half of the fourth inning and it took the first two batters of the inning to do so. Sophomore Luke Davis drew a base on ball and was followed by Jaden Chappell’s homerun to give his team a 5-2 lead. Jaden’s homerun gave him his second on the season.

Landry Chappell and Hayden Seifert look on as the Jays try and rally the bats. Guthrie is back in conference play Monday and Tuesday against El Reno.

The Lions opened the den, however, in the fourth inning by scoring six runs and taking their first lead of the day,  8-5. The Jays responded right back andregained the lead, 9-8, at the end of four.

Bowman and Corbin Crockett started the inning off with walks and then Davis, John Cotton, and Jaden Chappell collected back-to-back-to back singles.

Neither team could come across the plate in the fifth inning, but the Lions took the lead for good in the sixth with two runs to pull ahead 10-9.

In the home half of the sixth, Davis reached base by an error and with one out Jaden Chappell collected his second hit with a single, and that was followed by Hayden Seifert’s great at bat that saw him go to right field on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases. However, the Jays left the ducks on the pond and then saw Chandler capitalize on that with two more runs in the seventh to push their lead 12-9 heading into the final at bat for Guthrie.

Freshmen Bryan Dutton picked up his first hit of the day when he took an 0-2 pitch to the outfield and following him was Bowman’s walk. Guthrie then hit into a couple of fielder choice’s, in which, scored Dutton to cap the scoring.

The Jays then took the field with Kingfisher with the weather deteriorating the field conditions with winds and rain, but held on for the 8-3 win. John Cotton picked up the pitching win and Jaden Chappell smashed his third homerun of the season.

Jays return back to Squires on Monday afternoon and take on El Reno in confernece play, where the Jays stand at 5-0. Both teams return to the field, on Tuesday, in El Reno.

Golf team endures tough conditions, field

The Guthrie Lady Jays golf team got to play on one of the prettiest golf courses in the state at Rose Creek Golf Club, in Edmond, playing in the Deer Creek Invitational, but the course has seen better days.

“Conditions were horrible – 35mph winds and cold, but we managed to get 4th place,” head coach Mike Longstreth said.

In a field with 6A schools, Mustang took the team title with a score of 356, Edmond North was second at 375, Westmoore finished third at 388.

McCandren Lewis finished in a tie for 5th individually.

Longstreth and the Lady Jays go to Cushing, on Monday. Last season, Guthrie finished second in last years tournament.

Jays collect third win in a row over Eagles

Starting pitcher Hayden Seiftert was given run support early and often against the Del City Eagle’s and resulting in Seifert picking up his first win of the season.

Hayden Seifert got his first win of the season as the Jays took down 6A Del City.

Guthrie, winners of their last three games, put up crooked numbers in each of their four at bats as seven different Jays scored.

The Jays pulled two runs across in the first with the first run coming off the bat of sophomore Luke Davis. Senior Corbin Crockett started the inning with a single, and scored on Davis’ double.

The hit that gave Guthrie their first big advantage early came from senior Jaden Chappell in the second inning. Chappell drilled a three RBI double to give Guthrie a 6-1 lead after two complete. Chappell just missed a homerun in the fourth inning with the wind blowing in and had to settle with another double.

In the third, Guthrie collected two more runs and got things started with a base hit from sophomore catcher Landry Chappell. Senior Zac Bobo followed that with a walk and freshmen Bryan Dutton brought in the run with a single. Senior Dustin Bowman reached second base on a Del City fielding error and another Eagle error on the same play allowed Bowman to second and Bobo to score.

Landry Chappell scored cousin Jaden Chappell on a single in the fourth and Dutton followed that later with a RBI double. Dutton joined Crockett and Davis in scoring two runs each.

Del City scored a run in each of the second and fifth innings.

Seifert is 1-0 in three pitching appearance’s as he and the Jays return back to Squires Saturday morning when they take on Kingfisher (11am) and Chandler (4pm). Kingfisher and Chandler will play each other with a scheduled time of 1:30.

Coach Schuman:Have you been to the NUC before? How did you do? What were your expectations going into this years event?
KentrelL Brothers: Yes I went once before but that was for wide receiver. I am getting recruited to play linebacker so coming into this camp I knew it would be difficult. That’s why I made sure to pay attention when our position coach was explaining what we were going to do.

Coach Schuman:You were MVP! What are your goals now?
Kentrell Brothers: To work on every single one of my weaknesses. My goal now is to becoming better and hope to win another one.

Coach Schuman:How did you hear about the National Underclassmen Combine and what was your favorite part about the event?
Kentrell Brothers:My uncle told me about the combine and my favorite part about it was getting to speak with all the athletes there. It was a really good experience.

Coach Schuman:What do you like about high school football? What are your goals for your team and yourself?
Kentrell Brothers: I like being around all of my friends. I like getting to be around the people I love the most. My goal is just to play the best that I can and to lead our team to a state championship.

Coach Schuman:Do you play other sports? Tell about your accomplishments?
Kentrell Brothers: I play basketball. I was the leading scorer on our team this past year.

Coach Schuman:What is your favorite thing about football? what makes it a great sport to you?
Kentrell Brothers: The contact. A sport where I can hit someone and not get in trouble for it :) LOL

Coach Schuman:Tell me about your training regimen…How do you get better every day?
Kentrell Brothers: Well starts off in the weight room. I try to go 100% all the time.

Coach Schuman:What are you looking for in college? Academically? football?

Richard Brothers could be a great target for Bryan Dutton come fall on the gridiron.

Guthrie freshmen Richard Brothers recently attended Schuman’s National Underclassmen Combine in Duncanville, TX where he came away with the MVP honor at the wide receiver position. Here is the post combine interview Brothers had following the combine.

Coach Schuman: What did you do to prepare for the National Underclassmen Combine?
Richard Brothers: Well, my uncle told me that there was an upcoming camp. But, when he told me I was still in basketball. So, I told him I would stay after my basketball practices and lift weights and work on getting prepared. So from the day he told me to the day of the camp, I continued to life weights after practice and squats and stuff like that a little running. Thats how I prepared myself.

Coach Schuman:Have you been to the NUC before? How did you do? What were your expectations going into this years event?
Richard Brothers: Yes, I went to one in Tulsa and that was when I was and 8th grader and got M.V.P for W/R. So when I found out that I  was going back I prepared myself to go back and do the same thing. And that’s what I did.

Coach Schuman:You were MVP! What are your goals now?
Richard Brothers: My goals now is to work much harder then before and put a lot more effort into working out. I plan on getting bigger over the summer and to make my testing skills for both football and school A LOT better. I want to make it to college and someday to the PROS.

Coach Schuman:How did you hear about the National Underclassmen Combine and what was your favorite part about the event?
Richard Brothers: My uncle, he keeps me and my big brother Kentrell informed about these things so we’re ready for them. My favorite part was 1 on 1 and the showcase when I got too run routes and using my size to advantage and I thought in my head ” man I am ready for this, these D/B’s aren’t even ready I am taking M.V.P”.

Coach Schuman:If you can choose 5 schools where you would be interested in playing what would they be?
Richard Brothers: OSU, OU, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Kansas State. But, you can’t look or count on one particular school you have to look at every school that offers you no matter if there d1 or d2 because you never know what could happen.

Coach Schuman:What do you like about high school football? What are your goals for your team and yourself?
Richard Brothers: The thing I like about high school football is just playing, nothing really specific. Its just when its time to play its time to give everything you got. Just gotta push myself. My goals for my team is to help them out the best I can. I look forward to playing varsity with my brother. My goals for myself is to push myself and get  bigger,.

Coach Schuman:Do you play other sports? Tell about your accomplishments?
Richard Brothers: Yes, I play basketball. Well, I am a freshman and I worked hard to play for varsity and all my hard work paid off.

Coach Schuman:What is your favorite thing about football? what makes it a great sport to you?
Richard Brothers: Everything about it, it keeps you busy and it can get you places.

Coach Schuman:Tell me about your training regimen…How do you get better every day?
Richard Brothers: I have training equipment like the SPARQ parachute & sled and a couple of more good things my uncle and grandfather bought for me and my brother to use.

Coach Schuman:What are you looking for in college? Academically? football?
Richard Brothers: I am looking for a college that will help me get a degree in whatever field I choose. In football, I would like them to help me reach my fullest potential and maybe someday make it to the pros.
